Today we (the computer public), found out that Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool, talks to your computer every day! This activity has not been disclosed by MS and is so covert, routine inspection of firewall logs to date, by many very capable people, has not exposed the activity. Very clever MS.
GROKLAW has an article illuminating the issue and some (corp speak) comments by MS, attempting to smooth this over. Didn't make me feel any better. Starting to look like giving up some neat games and a few Amateur Radio programs will be worth the peace of mind I would get from building a FreeBSD workstation over this XP box.
If you read the previous post, you saw that I cut over to underground services and in the process tore-down the airel power drops. Well, after that the noise level on 75m totally changed in character from "snap crackle pop" to the smooth white noise hiss of the background noise from the Big Bang! Well, almost.
I began a systematic inspection of the old power cables and found that the 100amp feed to my storage building had two (2) ruptures in the insulation of one leg of the split phase feed to the bullding. I took some close-up pictures of the offending buggers that you can see if you read on:....
I took a little time to play with Wikies on the FreeBSD box and ran into frustrating problems with crashes and 'internal compiler errors'. I have a brand new install of 6.1 on the box and figured that there may be issues w/ the OS. Begin the WitchHunt:
Moved back to 6.0 and loaded the system down, crash! Hmmm, checked the lists and sure 'nuf, no issues.
Built a MEMTEST86-3.2 disk and started checking my RAM modules. I'm using 100ns 128mB sticks on the old Abit 440-BX6. Since the CPU is only a 450mHz PII, I decided to test the sticks one at a time in the first bank (of 4), in hopes of cashing in on finding an error sooner. Welp, no joy. Two days later, all ram tested just fine.
Feel like I've been working hard enough to build a pyramid yet, progress is only incremental. AC mains are pulled (not terminated), most trenches backfilled and have 'aprons' on the shop man door and rollup. Phew! I'm ready to kick back. You'll see that frustrated attempt in the next article.
Checked in to post this and saw that my friend Rainer - DJ8CL commented on previous. Good to hear from Rainer. Maybe he will get an account and contribuite.
